Seneca Street Afterschool runs 3:30 – 5:30pm, Monday – Thursday, from September through June.  Children do homework, may be tutored in math and reading, read, work on skills or play quiet games from 3:30-4:40pm daily. Children participate in several enrichment activity options (science club, recreation/fitness class, one of the clubs or crafts) from 4:45-5:15pm. After enrichment, children receive a warm, homemade meal courtesy of our fabulous volunteers before going home at 5:30pm.

Kristin Cook is our Youth Programs Director. Kristin holds a Master’s Degree in Elementary and Special Education. Before coming to Seneca Street, Kristin spent 5 years in the public schools.

Since Kristin’s arrival,  new “clubs” have been introduced to the program as enrichment activities.
These activities include:

Juggling - We just finished our juggling group - thank you very much to two of our volunteers,  Stacie and Nathan Stone, for all of your hard work and enthusiasm!  The kids enjoyed it and it was fun entertaining keeping an eye out for flying beanbags.

Sewing - One of our volunteers works with the students, with our two lovely donated sewing machines, to make different items.  They've made several projects so far and it seems to be a huge hit!  If you have fabric or sewing tools you'd like to donate, please contact Kristin Cook.

Boys Club - Activities of their choosing with 2nd -4th grade boys

"Anything Goes" Club - children choose an idea (making playdough, telling scary stories, painting, etc.) and plan their activities and a staff member or college mentor facilitates.

Girls on the Run - We just finished our first GOTR program!  Girls in grades 3-6 participated in a structured curriculum incorporating discussions about tough topics, building self-esteem and self-confidence, and building the endurance necessary to complete a 5k event at the end of our program (Nov. 10th - Lindsey's Legacy Run in North Tonawanda).

Physical Fitness - All students participate in a series of competitive sports sessions to learn new skills, work on team building, and build conflict resolution strategies and coping mechanisms through physical activity and competitive sport.  Anthony Kelly directs our physical fitness programs.

The same favorite activities are still offered during Afterschool which include: Arts and Crafts with Miss Carol, Gym/Playground, Fun Foods, Science Club, and Music Club and Music Lessons.

GAP PERIOD May 6th - June 6th - Please volunteer with us!
From May 6th - June 6th we will not have our normal complement of college mentors.  Additional volunteers are very much needed on these dates!  Please consider volunteering for one or more days - you can come one afternoon, or every week!  Any assistance is much appreciated.
We still need volunteers during the following weeks:
May 13th - May 16th
May 20th - 23rd
May 28th - 30th
June 3rd - June 6th

We will also need help for Reading Camp over the summer - July 15th - July 25th.

Sign up for one or more volunteer dates by clicking the button below or contact Cheryl Bird (716-491-2200).
Volunteer with Us!
With the loss of our Americorps partnership and decreased grant funding and donations, we are unable to retain all of our full-time staff.  As a non-profit group (we do NOT charge our kids any fees!) we are completely dependent on grant funding, partnerships and donations.  We are committed to working with these students in this Buffalo neighborhood who so desperately need this safe, positive learning environment for their afterschool hours.  Please consider donating to help support our wonderful staff and help us to continue our mission.
